Why is it important?

It provides key animal treatment guidelines for the dairy industry - outlining the use of registered veterinary medicines (prescription animal remedy or PAR) as well as products considered exempt, such as homeopathic treatments.

The ACVM Act prohibits the use of unapproved products. It requires that registered veterinary medicines (PAR products) must be prescribed by a veterinarian, which generally requires a consultation or an order for supply.

Under the Animal Products Act 1999, the New Zealand Food Safety Authority Code of Practice for the Design and Operation of Farm Dairies further outlines how medicines should be stored and administered and how milk withholding times and treatment records must be kept.
