The Animal Welfare Act
New Zealand relies on the export of animal products and therefore should be a leader in animal welfare standards, as international and local consumers alike can both be influenced by practices used on-farm.
The Animal Welfare Act 1999 is a broad piece of legislation that pertains to all animals. It sets out core obligations to meet an animal’s physical, health and behavioural needs, and to alleviate pain or distress.
Sections 10, 11, 23, 28 and 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 1999 are key sections relevant to dairy farmers. Failing to meet your obligations under this act may result in a fine being imposed on you / your business.
The Animal Welfare Act is complemented by individual Codes of Welfare that provide more specific minimum standards of animal care and encourage good practice.
